Those in the trade at Vellmar spoke of the matter with some satisfaction. A woman who had come in from the market observed that a counting-house is a counting-house whoever's name is over the door.

A storm strips roofs in Oberholt and fells the old lime in Short Row. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. We have it from a carter who declined to give his name that the affair was noisier than the report suggests.

17 January 1978. An Act for the Better Inspection of Medals passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the Annual War Appropriation. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. The debate was short.

The Exchange had a quiet week. The Ministry of Finance's published prices are as follows.
Bread, the loaf, 214.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 322.3 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 33.2 marka; a furnished room lets at 116.19 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 23,152.50. Bank rate stands at 6.29 per cent.
The War Appropriation for the year, 73,180,477 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
