Tarnmund Ironworks is declared bankrupt. 159 jobs are lost at Tarnmund. The particulars were entered in the register of companies at the Ministry of Finance. A fuller report will appear in tomorrow's editions.

The Exchange took the news in its stride; the close is given in the market column. Brokers in the textile rooms reported a quiet afternoon.

From Hollstadt: A fire in Mill Row at Hollstadt destroys 2 houses. The volunteer brigade attend. No lives are lost. perhaps 500 people by the constable's count gathered in the street and dispersed before first light, the roads being heavy after rain. Our picture shows the scene shortly afterwards.

29 December 1977. The Libraries (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 38 votes to 25. Applies to children between 5 and 11. Comes into force on 1 January 1978. It amends The Libraries Act. The measure went through its final stages in an afternoon.

The Regional Court of The Capital District, 31 December 1977. The Crown v. Valhardt. Concerning smuggling salt across the Sudmark. Ruling: fined 6242 marka. The gallery was half empty.

The Regional Court of Kesselhöh, 30 December 1977. Schall v. Klitzdor. Concerning an article in The Schwartzistan Herald. Ruling: for the plaintiff, 1040 marka. Judgment was given at ten in the forenoon.

A firm week on the Exchange. Prices in the capital:

Bread, the loaf, 214.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 322.3 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 33.2 marka; a furnished room lets at 116.19 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 23,152.50. Bank rate stands at 6.29 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 73,180,477 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
