The Ostra rises 70 centimetres above its mark at Norrwick. Cellars in New Gate Quay are flooded. One witness, a schoolmaster who happened to be passing, gave the following account: 'You could hear it in the next street.' Enquiries are continuing.

By our staff reporter, Dammberg. Gas lighting is installed in Church Way, Dammberg. Residents complain of the smell and the brightness. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. Our picture shows the scene shortly afterwards.

21 January 1973. The Salt Duties Regulation Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 51 votes to 11. Sets the duty at 10 pfen in the marka. The Speaker put the question at about half past 11.

19 January 1973. The Berging Police Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 57 votes to 6. Penalty on conviction: a fine of 30 marka or 11 months. The measure went through its final stages in an afternoon.

The Grand Chancellor, Viktor Crull, has held office since 14 February 1972.

The Regional Court of The Capital District, 22 January 1973. The Crown v. Klangfeld. Concerning smuggling salt across the Sudmark. Ruling: fined 879 marka. The court rose late in the afternoon sitting.

The Regional Court of Westgau, 21 January 1973. Stangen v. Reinholt. Concerning a contract for reed bundles not delivered. Ruling: damages of 879 marka. Judgment was given at ten in the forenoon.

The Regional Court of Westgau, 20 January 1973. Fenn v. Tarn. Concerning a boundary between two farms at Hochstadt. Ruling: for the plaintiff. Judgment was given late in the afternoon sitting.

The Market

A thin week on the Exchange. Prices in the capital:

Bread, the loaf, 175.9 pfen; beer, the litre, 263.8 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 26.11 marka; a furnished room lets at 91.38 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 21,396.70. Bank rate stands at 4.05 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 57,791,773 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
