Sanding, 24 July 1981

The telegraph reaches Sanding. The first message sent is the front-line report. We have it from a boatman from the lower quay that the affair was noisier than the report suggests. A spokesman for the town declined to add to the statement.

By the next morning Sanding had returned to its ordinary business, frost having made the causeway treacherous. A carter who declined to give his name said the town had seen the like before and would see it again.

Trading was dull on the Exchange this week. Published prices in the capital:

Bread, the loaf, 261.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 392.8 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 41.11 marka; a furnished room lets at 143.88 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 32,419.70. Bank rate stands at 5.47 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 90,554,982 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
