Sudholt Press lists on the Vellmar Exchange as SGE. The listing was read out on the floor of the Exchange in the customary form and the brokers proceeded to business. A fuller account appears in our regional pages.

The first train reaches Tarnmund. The journey from Vellmar takes 4 hours. A carter who declined to give his name said: 'I have lived here 50 years and I never saw the like.' Local reaction was muted.

The first television set in Kessel is demonstrated in the window of a shop in Ostra Square. A crowd gathers for the front-line report. Speaking to this journal, a retired sergeant of the Marsh Regiments said: 'They were very orderly about it.' The matter is expected to be raised in the Assembly.

7 July 1981. The Canal (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 48 votes to 6. Provides 234101 marka for works between Eisenheim and Reedtal. It amends An Act for the Better Licensing of Canal. The debate was lively.

7 July 1981. The Hospitals Regulation Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 38 votes to 25. Every town above 2000 inhabitants must appoint an officer under this Act. Comes into force on 1 January 1982. Members rose at a quarter past 6.

6 July 1981. An Act for the Better Licensing of Grain Duties passed. Passed by the Assembly by 41 votes to 10. Sets the duty at 11 pfen in the marka. The debate was brief.

5 July 1981. An Act for the Better Ordering of Medals passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the Annual War Appropriation. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. The debate was brief.

4 July 1981. The Turnpikes Regulation Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 49 votes to 11. Provides 215802 marka for works between Eisenheim and Grauburg. The final reading was formal.

The Grand Chancellor, Andrea Wendl, has held office since 14 February 1979.

The High Court, 10 July 1981. Wendl v. Hallin. Concerning the reckoning of a lease spanning the removed year. Ruling: lease shortened by one year under the Continuity Act. Judgment was delivered at half past 2 in the afternoon.

The Regional Court of Kesselhöh, 9 July 1981. The Crown v. Franwitz. Concerning fraud on the Royal Post. Ruling: acquitted. The public gallery was full.

The Regional Court of The Ostrand, 4 July 1981. Hallin v. Mesen. Concerning a boundary between two farms at Brennholt. Ruling: for the defendant. The parties left by separate doors.

The Market

The Exchange closed the week quiet. Prices:

Bread, the loaf, 261.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 392.8 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 41.11 marka; a furnished room lets at 143.88 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 32,419.70. Bank rate stands at 5.47 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 90,554,982 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
