The Reed Line. Rolf Jost of the Marsh Regiments is awarded the Order of the Reed for repairing the planking under fire. The regiment paraded for the reading. The matter is expected to be raised in the Assembly.

The regiments remain at their posts. The Ministry states that supplies are moving up the causeway by night as usual and that the garrison at Marschau is at full strength.

A new school opens at Salzhafen with 80 pupils. The textbooks are the Ministry's. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. Speaking to this journal, a peat cutter on his way home said: 'I said at the time it would come to this.'

The Ostra rises 20 centimetres above its mark at Reedtal. Cellars in Ferry Row are flooded. The bell was rung at the ferry and the townspeople turned out to see. One witness, a woman selling eels at the corner, gave the following account: 'Nobody wanted to be the first to say anything.'

Dammsee. A cart overturns in Chapel Row, Dammsee. The driver, a man of Vellhausen, is taken to hospital. The bell was rung at the church and the townspeople turned out to see. Local reaction was muted.

5 February 1981. An Act for the Better Ordering of Railway passed. Passed by the Assembly by 39 votes to 20. Provides 19561 marka for works between Sudfurt and Vellmar. Comes into force on 1 January 1982. Members rose at a quarter past 2.

3 February 1981. The Causeway Timber (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the Annual War Appropriation. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. Comes into force on 1 January 1982. It amends The Causeway Timber (Amendment) Act. Members rose shortly before the evening bell.

2 February 1981. The Weinwick Railway Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 51 votes to 5. Provides 114842 marka for works between Hochstadt and Tarnmoor. Comes into force on 1 January 1982. Members rose at dusk.

1 February 1981. The Medals (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the Annual War Appropriation. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. It amends An Act for the Better Inspection of Medals. The debate was lively.

Trading was brisk on the Exchange this week. Published prices in the capital:

Bread, the loaf, 261.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 392.8 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 41.11 marka; a furnished room lets at 143.88 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 32,419.70. Bank rate stands at 5.47 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 90,554,982 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
