From Salzhafen: A wireless set is installed in the town hall at Salzhafen so that the evening bulletin may be heard in public. The matter was the only talk at the inn that evening. Our picture shows the scene shortly afterwards.

By the next morning Salzhafen had returned to its ordinary business, the roads being heavy after rain. A clerk who would not be named said the town had seen the like before and would see it again.

A fire in Well Quay at Hollstadt destroys 7 houses. The garrison attend. No lives are lost. a knot of onlookers gathered in the street and dispersed late in the forenoon, the ford being passable. We have it from a woman who had come in from the market that the affair was brief.

The Assembly

9 March 1978. The Requisition Act passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the Annual War Appropriation. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. The measure went through its final stages in an afternoon.

5 March 1978. The Public Health Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 36 votes to 7. Every town above 5000 inhabitants must appoint an officer under this Act. The debate was long.

The Grand Chancellor, Viktor Crull, has held office since 14 February 1972.

The High Court, 7 March 1978. Wendl v. Kaffret. Concerning the reckoning of a lease spanning the removed year. Ruling: rent for the removed period not recoverable. The gallery was half empty.

The Court of Chronological Offences, 5 March 1978. The Crown v. A. G.. Concerning possession of a clock face with an unlicensed year. Ruling: the clock destroyed; no further penalty. Judgment was given when the court resumed after the midday adjournment.

The Regional Court of The Capital District, 3 March 1978. Wendl v. Grau. Concerning a boundary between two farms at Vellmar. Ruling: for the defendant. The gallery was closed for the reading.

The Exchange had a fair for the season week. The Ministry of Finance's published prices are as follows.

Bread, the loaf, 214.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 322.3 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 33.2 marka; a furnished room lets at 116.19 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 23,152.50. Bank rate stands at 6.29 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 73,180,477 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.

Oskar Quast, postal worker, born at Hollstadt on 13 January 1915, died 4 March 1978. Member of the Assembly. A postal worker of Hollstadt, remembered by neighbours as a regular at the reading room. The funeral service will be at the parish church.
