The Ostra rises 30 centimetres above its mark at Sudfurt

Sudfurt, 20 October 1817

The Ostra rises 30 centimetres above its mark at Sudfurt. Cellars in Cooper Row are flooded. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. One witness, the keeper of the toll-house, gave the following account: 'The dog knew before any of us.'

By the next morning Sudfurt had returned to its ordinary business, the causeway being under a hand's depth of water. A boatman from the lower quay said the town had seen the like before and would see it again.

The bells of Norrwick church are recast. They are rung for the first time on Sunday. One witness, a woman selling eels at the corner, gave the following account: 'The dog knew before any of us.' Further particulars will be given in a subsequent number.

The foundry at Marschau burns through the night

The foundry at Marschau burns through the night. 45 men are out of work. One witness, a retired sergeant of the Marsh Regiments, gave the following account: 'They were very orderly about it.' Of the rest we are not yet informed.

The Assembly

20 October 1817. The Regimental Colours Act passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the war estimates. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. The debate was short and the members for the regions took part in it.

17 October 1817. The Causeway Maintenance Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 37 votes to 2. Provides 15012 marka for works between Kessel and Grauholt. The honourable members proceeded to the measure with the House full, and the member who moved it was heard to the end.

14 October 1817. The Motorway Regulation Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 42 votes to 17. Provides 39198 marka for works between Tarnmund and Oberbach. Comes into force on 1 January 1818. The debate was short and the members for the regions took part in it.

The Grand Chancellor, Josef Ort, has held office since 1 May 1811.

The Courts

The Regional Court of Norrfeld, 20 October 1817. The Crown v. Granklitek. Concerning desertion from the Marsh Regiments. Ruling: acquitted: he was lost in the fog. The cause came on late in the afternoon sitting and the court was thinly attended.

The Regional Court of The Capital District, 19 October 1817. Brenn v. Weser. Concerning an unpaid debt of 38 marka. Ruling: dismissed. The parties were represented and the ruling was read from the bench.

The Regional Court of The Osmoor, 17 October 1817. The Crown v. Krillmann. Concerning theft of church bells. Ruling: 3 months. The court sat in The Regional Court of The Osmoor at ten in the forenoon.

The Regional Court of The Sudmark, 14 October 1817. The Crown v. Pfeil. Concerning assault at Weinau. Ruling: fined 3853 marka. The parties were represented and the ruling was read from the bench.

The Market

The markets of the week have been firm, the roads being dry for the season. The prices ruling in the capital are given below as sent up by the clerk of the market.

Bread, the loaf, 7.7 pfen; beer, the litre, 11.6 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 0.27 marka; a furnished room lets at 0.93 marka the month.

The parish returns for the week, as sent up to the Registrar, are as follows. Recorded this week throughout the country: 83 births, 24 marriages, 45 deaths. Population at the last return, 113,799.
