The Ostra rises 30 centimetres above its mark at Sudfurt. Cellars in Cooper Row are flooded. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. One witness, the keeper of the toll-house, gave the following account: 'The dog knew before any of us.'

By the next morning Sudfurt had returned to its ordinary business, the causeway being under a hand's depth of water. A boatman from the lower quay said the town had seen the like before and would see it again.
