The autumn fair opens at Sanding. 400 head of cattle change hands. Prices are described as firm. The bell was rung at the ferry and the townspeople turned out to see. One witness, a schoolmaster who happened to be passing, gave the following account: 'It will be talked of at the market for a week.'

The event is expected to be spoken of at the next market day, when the farmers come in from the surrounding country and the price of peat is settled for the month.
