Dammsee, 2 March 2004

The telegraph reaches Dammsee. The first message sent is the front-line report. The town clerk entered the matter in the minute book at noon. A woman who had come in from the market said: 'We heard it from the far bank and thought it was the ferry.'

The town officers met at noon the following day and resolved to enter the matter in the minute book. The ferry was open as usual.

192 years ago. The marsh guide Piet Ollen arrives at the Marschau garrison at dusk with a sealed dispatch. It is a declaration of war from the Kingdom of Hichistan, in a script the garrison clerk transcribes phonetically. Ollen says he was given it 'at the far edge' by 'men in grey'. Report.

191 years ago. The spring fair opens at Marschau. 500 head of cattle change hands. Prices are described as firm. Report.
