The Chancellor accepts the resignation 'with regret and without comment'. The letter of resignation was delivered to the Chancellery late in the forenoon. The honourable members were not surprised.

The Chancellery issued no further statement. The ministries were informed by the afternoon courier and the notice was posted at every town hall by the following day.
