The coldest night in 60 years is recorded at Hagenkirchen. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. One witness, a clerk who would not be named, gave the following account: 'I have lived here 50 years and I never saw the like.'
