Sanding, 19 February 1985

The bells of Sanding church are recast. They are rung for the first time on Sunday. The matter was the only talk at the market that evening. One witness, a woman selling eels at the corner, gave the following account: 'It was over before the bell had done ringing.'

The event is expected to be spoken of at the next market day, when the farmers come in from the surrounding country and the price of grain is settled for the month.

The coldest night in 40 years is recorded at Weinfeld. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. The bell was rung at the ferry and the townspeople turned out to see. One witness, the landlord of the inn, gave the following account: 'The clerk wrote it all down; you may ask him.'

16 February 1985. An Act for the Better Ordering of Causeway Maintenance passed. Passed by the Assembly by 40 votes to 21. Provides 250127 marka for works between Reedtal and Sandfeld. Members rose a little after 9 in the morning.

15 February 1985. An Act for the Better Provision of Telegraph passed. Passed by the Assembly by 34 votes to 0. Licences are issued by the Ministry of the Interior for a fee of 32 marka. Comes into force on 1 January 1986. Members rose at dusk.

14 February 1985. The Teachers' Pay (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 55 votes to 8. Applies to children between 7 and 15. It amends The Teachers' Pay (Amendment) Act. Members rose at noon.

The Exchange closed the week firm. Prices:

Bread, the loaf, 307.5 pfen; beer, the litre, 461.3 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 49.9 marka; a furnished room lets at 174.64 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 30,541.60. Bank rate stands at 6.07 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 110,422,307 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
