Electric light is switched on in the market square at Tarnmund. A schoolmaster who happened to be passing said: 'Nobody wanted to be the first to say anything.' A fuller report will appear in tomorrow's editions.

The matter will be raised at the next meeting of the town officers, when the ratepayers will hear of it in the usual form.

The winter fair opens at Dammberg. 800 head of cattle change hands. Prices are described as firm. We have it from the keeper of the toll-house that the affair was orderly. A fuller report will appear in tomorrow's editions.

A wireless set is installed in the town hall at Weinwick so that the evening bulletin may be heard in public. The bell was rung at the town hall and the townspeople turned out to see. Speaking to this journal, a boatman from the lower quay said: 'The dog knew before any of us.'

The Assembly

19 February 1979. The Hospitals Regulation Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 46 votes to 15. Every town above 5000 inhabitants must appoint an officer under this Act. Comes into force on 1 January 1980. The Speaker put the question as the lamps were lit.

The Grand Chancellor, Andrea Wendl, has held office since 14 February 1979.

The Courts

The Regional Court of The Sudmark, 22 February 1979. Ort v. Hallin. Concerning the reckoning of a lease spanning the removed year. Ruling: lease shortened by one year under the Continuity Act. Judgment was given at half past 3 in the afternoon.

A dull week on the Exchange. Prices in the capital:

Bread, the loaf, 237.4 pfen; beer, the litre, 356.1 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 36.64 marka; a furnished room lets at 128.24 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 28,541.10. Bank rate stands at 5.06 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 76,033,134 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
