Those in the trade at Kessel spoke of the matter freely. A woman who had come in from the market observed that a counting-house is a counting-house whoever's name is over the door.

Electric light is switched on in the market square at Hagenkirchen. The roads about Hagenkirchen were dry at the time. One witness, a boatman from the lower quay, gave the following account: 'Nobody wanted to be the first to say anything.'

From Oberbach: A storm strips roofs in Oberbach and fells the old lime in Reed Street. One witness, a woman who had come in from the market, gave the following account: 'I have lived here 30 years and I never saw the like.'

10 February 1978. The Sanitation (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 41 votes to 20. Every town above 5000 inhabitants must appoint an officer under this Act. Comes into force on 1 January 1979. It amends The Sanitation Act. The measure went through its final stages in an afternoon.

The Market

The Exchange had a fair for the season week. The Ministry of Finance's published prices are as follows.

Bread, the loaf, 214.8 pfen; beer, the litre, 322.3 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 33.2 marka; a furnished room lets at 116.19 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 23,152.50. Bank rate stands at 6.29 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 73,180,477 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.

Karl Brenn, physician, born at Bergberg on 17 February 1909, died 13 February 1978. Member of the Assembly. A physician of Bergberg, remembered by neighbours as a regular at the reading room. The funeral service will be at the parish church.
