The first train reaches Norrhafen. The journey from Vellmar takes 4 hours. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. Speaking to this journal, a carter who declined to give his name said: 'They were very orderly about it.'

Gas lighting is installed in High Street, Weinau. Residents complain of the smell and the brightness. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. One witness, a carter who declined to give his name, gave the following account: 'They were very orderly about it.'

The foundry at Sandfeld burns through the night. 13 men are out of work. The landlord of the inn said: 'It was over before the bell had done ringing.' The matter is expected to come before the town council.

The Market

The Exchange had a brisk week. The Ministry of Finance's published prices are as follows.

Bread, the loaf, 181.5 pfen; beer, the litre, 272.3 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 26.9 marka; a furnished room lets at 94.14 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 21,727. Bank rate stands at 4.98 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 60,202,010 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
