The Reed Line, 13 August 1946

The Summer Action at the Salt Reach. The 6th (Reserve) Marsh Regiment engages enemy movement in the reeds through the night and holds the line. The front is unchanged. The report is the War Ministry's and this journal prints it as the Ministry sends it. The front is unchanged.

The regiments remain at their posts. The Ministry states that supplies are moving up the causeway by night as usual and that the garrison at Marschau is at full strength.

Sandfeld, from our correspondent. The Ostra rises 40 centimetres above its mark at Sandfeld. Cellars in New Gate Way are flooded. One witness, a boatman from the lower quay, gave the following account: 'It was over before the bell had done ringing.'

The first train reaches Norrbruck

By our own correspondent. The first train reaches Norrbruck. The journey from Vellmar takes 4 hours. The roads about Norrbruck were under water at the time. Enquiries are continuing.

By our staff reporter, Sudfurt. A new bridge is opened at Sudfurt by the Minister of the Interior. It has 7 arches. The district officers attended at a quarter past 2. Our picture shows the scene shortly afterwards.

8 August 1946. The Weinwick Weights and Measures Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 37 votes to 24. Sets the duty at 6 pfen in the marka. The measure went through its final stages in an afternoon.

7 August 1946. The Banking (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 41 votes to 19. Sets the duty at 9 pfen in the marka. It amends The Banking Regulation Act. The measure went through its final stages in an afternoon.

The Regional Court of The Ostrand, 13 August 1946. Brenn v. Hallin. Concerning the reckoning of a lease spanning the removed year. Ruling: rent for the removed period not recoverable. Judgment was given when the court resumed after the midday adjournment.

The Regional Court of Westgau, 13 August 1946. Brenn v. Balvei. Concerning the reckoning of a lease spanning the removed year. Ruling: lease shortened by one year under the Continuity Act. Judgment was given shortly after noon.

The Regional Court of Westgau, 12 August 1946. The Crown v. Hallin. Concerning fraud on the Vellmar Exchange. Ruling: 9 years. Judgment was given late in the afternoon sitting.

The Regional Court of Norrfeld, 11 August 1946. Brenn v. Moor. Concerning an article in The Evening Courier. Ruling: for the plaintiff, 29030 marka. Judgment was given shortly after noon.

The Market

A thin week on the Exchange. Prices in the capital:

Bread, the loaf, 58.1 pfen; beer, the litre, 87.1 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 7.11 marka; a furnished room lets at 24.89 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 8,689.10. Bank rate stands at 4.62 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 14,246,159 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.

Deaths

Ernst Brenn, engineer, born at Grauhagen on 30 November 1871, died 12 August 1946. Member of the Assembly. A engineer of Grauhagen, remembered by neighbours as a quiet presence at the market. The funeral service will be at the parish church.
