The bells of Hagenkirchen church are recast. They are rung for the first time on Sunday. a fair number of the townspeople gathered in the street and dispersed at noon, frost having made the causeway treacherous. One witness, a peat cutter on his way home, gave the following account: 'Nobody wanted to be the first to say anything.'

The coldest night in 60 years is recorded at Berging. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. The matter was the only talk at the market that evening. A schoolmaster who happened to be passing said: 'I have lived here 50 years and I never saw the like.'

Gas lighting is installed in Salt Gate, Oberbach. Residents complain of the smell and the brightness. The bell was rung at the ferry and the townspeople turned out to see. Speaking to this journal, a peat cutter on his way home said: 'It was over before the bell had done ringing.'
