Vellmar, late last night. Wendl & Munen Machine Works is wound up. 572 jobs are lost at Vellmar. a peat cutter on his way home, asked for a view, offered none.

The Exchange took the news in its stride; the close is given in the market column. Brokers in the wine rooms reported a firm afternoon.

Norrwick (from our correspondent). A new school opens at Norrwick with 80 pupils. The textbooks are the Ministry's. One witness, the landlord of the inn, gave the following account: 'Nobody wanted to be the first to say anything.'

Brennholt, late last night. Gas lighting is installed in Long Street, Brennholt. Residents complain of the smell and the brightness. A schoolmaster who happened to be passing said: 'It was over before the bell had done ringing.'

7 July 1920. The Pensions (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 44 votes to 17. Every town above 1000 inhabitants must appoint an officer under this Act. It amends The Hollhausen Pensions Act. Third reading.

5 July 1920. The Highways Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 51 votes to 23. Provides 67200 marka for works between Oberholt and Norrwick. Comes into force on 1 January 1921. Passed without incident.

5 July 1920. The Vellhausen Military Pensions Act passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the Annual War Appropriation. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. Passed without incident.

Bread, the loaf, 34.1 pfen; beer, the litre, 51.2 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 33.96 marka; a furnished room lets at 25.58 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 3,878.50. Bank rate stands at 6.98 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 5,722,542 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.
