Bauer & Sons, Brewers lists on the Vellmar Exchange as BAS. The tone of the market was brisk. The affair is much discussed in the town.

Those in the trade at Vellmar spoke of the matter without surprise. A peat cutter on his way home observed that a counting-house is a counting-house whoever's name is over the door.

Weinau, this day. A cart overturns in New Gate Walk, Weinau. The driver, a man of Ostrabruck, is taken to hospital. We have it from a woman selling eels at the corner that the affair was orderly.

The Assembly

13 May 1856. The Road Traffic Regulation Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 50 votes to 13. Licences are issued by the Ministry of the Interior for a fee of 51 marka. Comes into force on 1 January 1857. The remaining stages were taken at dusk.

The Grand Chancellor, Jorn Wendl, has held office since 14 February 1853.

The Courts

The Regional Court of The Ostrand, 14 May 1856. The Crown v. Mengen. Concerning desertion from the Marsh Regiments. Ruling: 11 years. The court rose at half past 3 in the afternoon.

The Regional Court of Westgau, 9 May 1856. Brenn v. Kesselring. Concerning smoke from a paper mill at Hagenkirchen. Ruling: injunction granted. The court was thinly attended; judgment was given at the rising of the court.

The Market

Business on the Exchange was brisk throughout the week. The prices current in the capital are as follows.

Bread, the loaf, 9.9 pfen; beer, the litre, 14.9 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 0.5 marka; a furnished room lets at 1.77 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 731.90. Bank rate stands at 2.97 per cent.

The War Appropriation for the year, 714,922 marka, passed the Assembly without a dissenting voice.

Registers

The civil registers for the week show the following. Recorded this week throughout the country: 115 births, 36 marriages, 66 deaths. Population at the last return, 213,213.

Deaths

Hendrik Tarn, farmer, born at Berging on 21 December 1781, died 14 May 1856. Member of the Assembly. The funeral took place from the parish church at Berging; the mourners followed in the customary order, the family first and the trade after. The blinds in the street were drawn.
