The bells of Sudfurt church are recast

Sudfurt, 17 January 1845

The particulars which follow are furnished by a correspondent at Sudfurt, on whose accuracy we have found we may rely. The bells of Sudfurt church are recast. They are rung for the first time on Sunday. We have it from a boatman from the lower quay that the affair was orderly.

The event is expected to be spoken of at the next market day, when the farmers come in from the surrounding country and the price of cattle is settled for the month.

The Assembly

19 January 1845. The Dammsee Libraries Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 53 votes to 0. Applies to children between 5 and 11. Comes into force on 1 January 1846. The debate was short and the members for the regions took part in it.

18 January 1845. An Act for the Better Improvement of Reserve Forces passed. Passed by the Assembly without a division. Charged to the war estimates. Passed unanimously, as is customary for measures concerning the Line. The honourable members proceeded to the measure with the House in good humour, and the member who moved it was heard with some interruption.

The Grand Chancellor, Ivo Mahler, has held office since 14 February 1839.

The Courts

The Regional Court of Norrfeld, 21 January 1845. Brenn v. Brenn. Concerning a contract for iron rails not delivered. Ruling: contract void. The parties were represented and the ruling was read from the bench.

The Regional Court of Westgau, 20 January 1845. Marrow v. Kreil. Concerning an unpaid debt of 590 marka. Ruling: for the plaintiff, half the sum. The parties were represented and the ruling was read from the bench.

The Regional Court of The Sudmark, 16 January 1845. The Crown v. Kestmann. Concerning theft of coal. Ruling: acquitted. The parties were represented and the ruling was read from the bench.

The Market

The markets of the week have been firm, the ford being passable. The prices ruling in the capital are given below as sent up by the clerk of the market.

Bread, the loaf, 7.9 pfen; beer, the litre, 11.8 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 0.36 marka; a furnished room lets at 1.28 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 455.40. Bank rate stands at 3.71 per cent.

Registers

From the registers of the parishes, as returned to the capital. Recorded this week throughout the country: 123 births, 34 marriages, 70 deaths. Population at the last return, 181,954.

Deaths

Anton Retzer, mason, born at Marschmar on 4 April 1773, died 21 January 1845. Member of the Assembly. A mason of Marschmar, and of a family long settled there. The interment takes place on Saturday at the parish ground.

Sir, — Your account of what has lately occurred at Sudfurt will have been read with concern by every well-disposed person. I would only add that the roads thereabouts have been in want of attention these 3 years, and that the parish officers have been written to more than once.
