A new school opens at Salzhafen with 70 pupils

Salzhafen, 2 August 1835

The particulars which follow are furnished by a correspondent at Salzhafen, on whose accuracy we have found we may rely. A new school opens at Salzhafen with 70 pupils. The textbooks are the Ministry's. One witness, a woman selling eels at the corner, gave the following account: 'It will be talked of at the market for a week.'

The town officers met at noon the following day and resolved to do nothing for the present. The ferry was open as usual.

The Assembly

1 August 1835. The Public Health Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 43 votes to 9. Every town above 5000 inhabitants must appoint an officer under this Act. The honourable members proceeded to the measure with the House in good humour, and the member who moved it was heard to the end.

The Grand Chancellor, Fedor Hallin, has held office since 14 February 1832.

The Courts

The Regional Court of The Ostrand, 1 August 1835. The Crown v. Lierner. Concerning fraud on the War Ministry. Ruling: 11 years. The parties were represented and the ruling was read from the bench.

The Regional Court of The Osmoor, 31 July 1835. The Crown v. Oberst. Concerning theft of church bells. Ruling: 17 months. The court sat in The Regional Court of The Osmoor at ten in the forenoon.

The Market

The markets of the week have been dull, the ford being passable. The prices ruling in the capital are given below as sent up by the clerk of the market.

Bread, the loaf, 7.6 pfen; beer, the litre, 11.4 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 0.32 marka; a furnished room lets at 1.11 marka the month. The Exchange index closed the year at 927.10. Bank rate stands at 3.03 per cent.

Registers

From the registers of the parishes, as returned to the capital. Recorded this week throughout the country: 100 births, 34 marriages, 51 deaths. Population at the last return, 155,032.

31 years ago. The summer fair opens at Vellmar. 500 head of cattle change hands. Prices are described as firm. Report.

24 years ago. The tannery at Vellhausen burns through the night. 39 men are out of work. Report.

Correspondence

Sir, — Permit an old subscriber to observe that the price of bread in the capital, which your columns give at 7.6 pfen, is not to be had in the country at anything like that figure. Your correspondent does not say where he buys his loaf. A Subscriber since the Founding, Dammberg.
