A fire in School Way at Kessel destroys 4 houses
Kessel, 7 May 1829
A fire in School Way at Kessel destroys 4 houses. The garrison attend. No lives are lost. One witness, the landlord of the inn, gave the following account: 'The dog knew before any of us.' Of the rest we are not yet informed.
The town officers met shortly before the evening bell the following day and resolved to do nothing for the present. The ferry was open as usual.

Corn and provisions have been quiet; the following are the prices current in the capital.
Bread, the loaf, 7 pfen; beer, the litre, 10.5 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 0.28 marka; a furnished room lets at 0.99 marka the month. Bank rate stands at 2.5 per cent.
