Sudfurt, 31 January 1827

The coldest night in 70 years is recorded at Sudfurt. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. The roads about Sudfurt were under water at the time. Speaking to this journal, the sexton said: 'We heard it from the far bank and thought it was the ferry.'

The matter will be raised at the next meeting of the town officers, when the ratepayers will hear of it in the usual form.

Weinau marks the 600th anniversary of its charter with a procession along Garrison Street. The matter was the only talk at the inn that evening. One witness, a schoolmaster who happened to be passing, gave the following account: 'The clerk wrote it all down; you may ask him.'

The Assembly

5 February 1827. The Canal (Amendment) Act passed. Passed by the Assembly by 51 votes to 8. Provides 845 marka for works between Tarnmund and Grauburg. It amends The Canal Act. The honourable members proceeded to the measure with the House in good humour, and the member who moved it was heard to the end.

The Grand Chancellor, Fedor Hallin, has held office since 24 October 1826.

The Courts

The Regional Court of Norrfeld, 3 February 1827. Laulhuch v. Brenn. Concerning an unpaid debt of 219 marka. Ruling: for the plaintiff, half the sum. The court sat in The Regional Court of Norrfeld at the rising of the court.

The Market

The markets of the week have been dull, frost having made the causeway treacherous. The prices ruling in the capital are given below as sent up by the clerk of the market.

Bread, the loaf, 7.3 pfen; beer, the litre, 11 pfen. A labourer's day is paid at 0.28 marka; a furnished room lets at 0.99 marka the month. Bank rate stands at 2.28 per cent.

From the registers of the parishes, as returned to the capital. Recorded this week throughout the country: 109 births, 29 marriages, 46 deaths. Population at the last return, 135,364.
