The coldest night in 20 years is recorded at Lindenmar. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. The bell was rung at the town hall and the townspeople turned out to see. The keeper of the toll-house said: 'The dog knew before any of us.'
The town officers met before first light the following day and resolved to make a return to the Ministry of the Interior. The inn was open as usual.
