The coldest night in 50 years is recorded at Oberholt. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. The bell was rung at the ferry and the townspeople turned out to see. A woman who had come in from the market said: 'We heard it from the far bank and thought it was the ferry.'
By the next morning Oberholt had returned to its ordinary business, the causeway being under a hand's depth of water. A woman who had come in from the market said the town had seen the like before and would see it again.
