The coldest night in 20 years is recorded at Grauburg. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. Word reached the market square within the hour and was the talk of it for the rest of the day. Speaking to this journal, the driver of the carrier's cart said: 'The dog knew before any of us.'
By the next morning Grauburg had returned to its ordinary business, the roads being dry for the season. The keeper of the toll-house said the town had seen the like before and would see it again.
