The coldest night in 60 years is recorded at Hochstadt. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. a crowd which the constable declined to estimate gathered in the street and dispersed at about half past 8, the causeway being under a hand's depth of water. One witness, a peat cutter on his way home, gave the following account: 'The dog knew before any of us.'
