The coldest night in 30 years is recorded at Vellmar. Lake Tarn freezes to the middle. Speaking to this journal, a peat cutter on his way home said: 'You could hear it in the next street.' More follows.
The event is expected to be spoken of at the next market day, when the farmers come in from the surrounding country and the price of grain is settled for the month.
